2013 Favourites

Today I present to you my favourite beauty products of 2013. If you're not sick of reading these posts already then read on to see what I loved in 2013!

I think 2013 was a great year for L'Oréal Paris. They had some great new releases and I've generally loved everything I've tried from the brand. Sometimes I find it hard to find shampoo and conditioner that 1) doesn't weigh down my fine hair, 2) still provides enough moisture so that it isn't dry and 3) doesn't irritate my fairly sensitive scalp. Often when using shampoos and conditioners I find that I have to alternate them with Head & Shoulders to stop my scalp from becoming too itchy. I decided to give the much raved about L'Oréal Paris EverRiche haircare range a go as it sounded great with it's botanical oils and paraben free formula. It was love from the very first wash with these! I originally tried the Nourishing & Taming variety of shampoo/conditioner within the range but I've went on to the Nourishing & Flowing range pictured above. Both varieties are amazing and smell really nice. The shampoo creates a rich lather leaving my hair feel super clean but not stripped. The conditioners are both rich and leave my hair with the right level of nourishment. I've got some shampoo and conditioner from the EverStrong range to try next as I reckon they will be great too!

Lots of beauty bloggers rave about Bioderma Micellar Solution for removing their makeup but I didn't really think it was worth the hype. I found it to be pretty expensive and it didn't remove my makeup as well as I would have liked. When L'Oréal Paris released their own version this year I thought I'd give it a go to see if I liked this version any better. Honestly, the Skin Perfection 3 in 1 Purifying Micellar Solution is simply amazing! The one pictured is my 4th bottle of the stuff! The price is unbeatable, especially when it's on offer for just over £3, it removes all of my makeup easily and it's available in lots of places (Boots, Superdrug, supermarkets, etc). What's not to love really?!

I haven't tried a lot of Bumble and bumble products but one of my most lusted after products was their Thickening hairspray so you can imagine my delight when I saw a travel sized version free with Elle magazine in the Summer. This is great for applying to wet hair before blow drying to add thickness and volume to fine hair. It doesn't make the hair feel sticky either so that's great. I've since bought another bottle of this from the sales for when this runs out!

In 2013, I bought a lot of new makeup brushes, mainly from Real Techniques and a few from EcoTools. I have to say, as brand in general, I've been loving Real Techniques. Their brushes are really good quality for the price and I'll happily keep adding to my collection! My most used brush from Real Techniques is the Buffing Brush which I love to use for flawless foundation application but I'm quite looking forward to experimenting with my other brushes this year too.

The EcoTools Bamboo Blush Brush is also very affordable and great quality. I like the size and shape of this one for (obviously) applying blush. It works for both cream and powder blushes but I do prefer it for powder application. It's also really soft!

A great concealer find this year is the Bare Minerals Stroke of Light which is really good for dark circles. It has a very peachy tone to it which is great for cancelling out blue tones! It's also really easy to apply with its long flat spongy applicator and feels cooling when it touches the skin.

Bourjois is another brand who seem to be bringing out great products lately and I was rather excited by the new primer offerings this year. They have matte and luminous versions but I went for the luminous version having quite dehydrated skin in need of a boost! It's from the Happy Light range that they released including a foundation and concealer. Unfortunately the lightest shade of foundation and concealer seemed rather dark so I can't try those but the luminous primer is amazing. It doesn't look much when I first apply it to the skin but I find it really does make my skin look luminous once I have my foundation on. It makes foundation easier to apply, I feel like it glides on better and you don't need to use as much. It's the only primer I've used that makes my skin look radiant.

My obsession with lip products went off the scale in 2013 and I seemed to accumulate a rather large amount of lipsticks as I've become more confident wearing bolder colours and different formulas. I took my first foray into matte lip products starting with the Maybelline Super Stay 24 Bold Matte in the shade Peach Cocktail. First all of all I would like to say how beautiful and bold that colour is. It's the perfect peachy-pinky-corally colour! Amazing for Spring/Summer nights out. You apply the colour end of this in a thin layer on to the lips and it is so pigmented. Once it dries it stays on for hours even after drinking numerous cocktails! It feels so comfortable on the lips too, especially with the addition of the balm end of the product. I've looked at other colours in this range and none of them have quite taken my fancy as much as this one but I'll certainly keep my eyes peeled for more in the future.

The YSL Rouge Pur Couture lipstick in the shade Fuchsia Clandestin was one of my favourite 'purchases' (free with Boots points!) of 2013. It just screams luxury with it's heavy gold casing and the product is beautiful. It's a glamourous pinky red shade and once applied it stays on for hours and hours! It's not even a matte lipstick so I'm amazed at its staying power! I'm definitely on the look out for more of these this year.

Lip crayons have become massive in the last year, with every brand appearing to create their own version. I'm definitely a big fan of these and would say my two favourite offerings have been the L'Oréal Paris Glam Shines especially in the shade Sin for Peach and the Bourjois Color Boosts. I love that these are quite glossy versions but still pigmented at the same time. The Bourjois Peach on the Beach shade is just wow! The peachy colour just makes you think of Summer doesn't it?

An item that I use pretty much every day is the original Urban Decay Naked palette. I tend to use the lighter shades on the left for an every day wash of colour that's suitable for work. Sometimes I do experiment with the other shades for nights out but certainly not enough! I get too lazy or I have too many other products! For some reason, despite loving this palette so much, I never bought the Naked 2 palette even though the cooler shades in that one are probably more suited to my skin tone. However, in December when the Naked 3 palette was released I went crazy for the rose gold packaging and super pretty pink toned eyeshadows. I can see this featuring in my 2014 favourites!

MAC Paint Pots are something I got round to trying in 2013. I think it's because of cream eyeshadows becoming quite popular among the drugstore brands, I fancied trying the MAC version which had been around for years. I now have two in my collection but the shade Vintage Selection is definitely my favourite. I've been loving this for nights out. It's so easy to swipe on to your eyelids with fingers and this one is a neutral colour that will go with most blush/lipstick but it also has an element of glitter/shimmer making it perfect for partying. It's really long-lasting too.

Finally, I thought I would mention nail polish. I've bought a lot of nail polish in the last few years so this is something I need to cut down on and try and get rid of some of the older bottles lurking around in my collection. Through experimenting I have found my two favourite brands though and they are Essie and the Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine formula.

Essie feels quite luxurious to me for some reason even though they are cheaper than other brands such as Nails Inc. I just really like the packaging, the colour range and the wide brush that makes the polish so easy to apply. They have really fun seasonal collections too and I pretty much always have to buy at least one from each collection!

The Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine range is super affordable and a lot of their polishes are opaque in one shade which makes a sometimes tedious job, not too bad! They have really fun colours and the gel finish is really nice, making them look more expensive than they are.

The shades pictured are Essie Peach Daiquiri and Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine Pomegranate. Both lovely colours that are some of the most loved in my collection.

  6. I love that range of l'oreal shampoo... reminds me that I actually need to start using my half full tubes again! Still not tried the L'oreal water, but only because I've got one and a half bottles of Bioderma (which I actually really like, but usually have to oil-wash off mascara!) to get through first.

Sooo in love with Essie this year, I'd like to mostly blame fragrance direct for that!
